Camping vacationers have to expect significantly higher prices this year. On average, German campsites have to pay 6.5 percent more in the summer season than a year ago, a spokeswoman for the internet platform “camping.info” told the German Press Agency on Thursday. Within Germany it is most expensive in Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and cheapest in Thuringia and Saarland.

The biggest increase is in Hamburg: In the high season, two people including a parking space, caravan, electricity and local tax would now have to expect an average of 40.74 euros per night, a good 17 percent more than a year ago. The second most expensive place is in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania at 32.45 euros. Compared to 2023, prices there only rose by 5.7 percent. The portal found the lowest costs for campers in Thuringia (23.23 euros), Saarland (23.65 euros) and Saxony-Anhalt (23.69 euros). Prices have also increased there; a year ago the three federal states were still under 23 euros.

It is most expensive in Italy at 39.24 euros, followed by Croatia (38.77 euros) and Switzerland (38.66 euros). For the first time in years, Switzerland is not at the top of the most expensive camping countries, said the spokeswoman. Compared to 2023, the costs there only increased by 1.7 percent. The cheapest place to camp is in Albania (13.52 euros), followed by Turkey (14.59 euros), where prices remained unchanged compared to 2023. For the comparison, the portal evaluated the prices of more than 20,000 campsites in 34 European countries.

“If you want to camp on a small holiday budget, you should look for places away from the tourist hotspots and, if possible, go outside of peak travel times,” advises Maximilian Möhrle, managing director of the travel and booking portal. “Campers can also find inexpensive campsites, especially away from the tourist hotspots.” However, you shouldn’t wait too long before booking. “If in doubt, spontaneous campers must expect higher prices or even completely booked places.”
