A little more than two weeks after escaping while visiting a doctor outside Mannheim prison, a criminal is back behind bars. The 25-year-old was arrested in a hotel in Weinheim near Heidelberg, the police said. He didn’t offer any resistance. Police did not provide any details about the circumstances of the arrest.
However, there is still no trace of another escaped prisoner. The offender from the Bruchsal prison had already escaped at the end of October during a guarded trip to a quarry lake in Germersheim (Rhineland-Palatinate).
Accomplice arrived on scooter
The man arrested on Friday had used a doctor’s visit to the clinic in Mannheim’s neighboring town of Ludwigshafen on December 14th to escape. He was accompanied by two servants.
After treatment at the orthodontist, he was also handcuffed and tied to an employee, as the Ministry of Justice subsequently reported. However, this restraint was released in the open door of the transporter so that the prisoner could get in. At that moment the man broke away, while at the same time an accomplice approached from behind on a motor scooter and fired a shot into the air with a weapon.
The man was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Mannheim Regional Court in October 2022 for, among other things, particularly serious predatory extortion and predatory extortion.
The second escape after the incident in Germersheim also led to sharp criticism of the Baden-Württemberg Justice Minister Marion Gentges (CDU). Your Ministry of Justice has now tightened the requirements for statements by decree.
