Sepsis is a medical emergency – like a heart attack or stroke. But almost every second person has no idea what the term means, as surveys show. Prof. Brenner, what is the problem?
For medical emergencies such as heart attacks and strokes, there have been large-scale awareness campaigns in recent decades – which is good. So far, however, this has not been done for sepsis, although this is also a life-threatening disease, from which around 320,000 people fall ill and 70,000 people die every year in Germany alone. Remarkable numbers, but they are very likely to be underestimated.
What are the reasons?
