Karin Beier is greedy. This is what the theater director and artistic director of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus says about herself when she talks about her passion. “The great thing about staging are simply moments when you surpass yourself,” she says in the stern podcast “Die Boss”, “that is an unbelievable intensity of attitude to life.” She can never have enough of that.

For a long time, Beier worked as a freelance theater director. Until she took over the management of the Cologne theater in 2007. For nine years now she has been responsible for the artistic direction of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. However, the 57-year-old never lost her passion for staging. Her aspiration: to also implement politically important topics, even if they don’t fill the entire auditorium.

As artistic director and director, Beier basically has two jobs. She is also a mother and wife. Her everyday life is structured, leaving little room for spontaneity. Her dog, a border collie, gives her distraction. “Whenever I go out into nature, I come back happier,” she says. But in a conversation with “Die Boss” host Simone Menne, Beier also becomes honest: “I notice that I have the strength that I had eight years ago , just don’t have anymore.”

As director, Beier is primarily a crisis manager. She’s just good at finding solutions. In this she is quite sure and self-confident. As a director, things are very different. “I often sleep badly and also have bad dreams because that’s just the stable I come from. I’m much more sensitive and of course my own artistic work is extremely important to me,” says Beier.

In this episode of “Die Boss” you can find out how Karin Beier came to the theater, why she recommends everyone to lead a double life and what a flock of sheep in Scotland has to do with it.

At “The Boss – Power is Female” top women speak among themselves: hostess and multi-board member Simone Menne (BMW, Deutsche Post DHL, Henkel, among others) meets female bosses from all areas of society to talk to them about their lives and careers. “Die Boss” appears fortnightly on Wednesdays on stern.de and the stern YouTube channel as well as on RTL and all common podcast platforms.
