When Volkswagen presented the ID.3 at the Zwickau plant in 2020, even Chancellor Angela Merkel did the honors. The physicist and CEO Herbert Diess saw him as the beacon of hope for the turnaround in traffic. The star wrote at the time: “Success or failure of this car will also be decisive for the future of Germany as a car country. If the ID.3 is accepted by customers and becomes a Volkswagen in the literal sense, electromobility as a whole will experience an upswing.”
