The police in Hamburg observed suspected telephone scam artists during a money transfer on Wednesday evening and then caught them. The group had long been suspected of having stolen money and valuables as fake bank employees, the Hamburg police said on Thursday.

Civil investigators followed two men and two women to a residential building in the Bramfeld district. After a 37-year-old alleged perpetrator left the building, the officers spoke to the 80-year-old resident. The police said that she had spoken on the phone to an alleged bank employee shortly before the woman arrived. She was persuaded to hand over cash, her debit card and the PIN to an employee for security reasons. According to the police, a vehicle with the suspects was then stopped and the occupants arrested for the time being. The stolen valuables were found in the car.
