For their study, the scientists from the University of Helsinki and other European universities examined human skeletons found in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. They came to the conclusion that around 3000 to 2500 BC in the Yamnaya culture, horseback riding was evidently the first time. This can be concluded from the shape and the nature of the skeletons.
“When you’re on horseback, you have to keep balancing and tightening your legs,” Martin Trautmann of the University of Helsinki told AFP. This also changes the skeleton in the long term, which is why the current findings have become possible.
