A man drove his pickup truck into pedestrians in the small Canadian town of Amqui, killing two people. Another nine were injured in the incident on Monday (local time), police in the province of Quebec said, according to media reports. The 38-year-old driver fled the scene of the accident, but later turned himself in to the police and was arrested. The 6,000-inhabitant city of Amqui is located around 640 kilometers northeast of Montreal.

The man collided with pedestrians with his car on a national road, then drove on and hit other people, the police said. According to the “Journal de Québec”, eyewitnesses reported that the flatbed truck had driven more than 900 meters on the sidewalk and on the street. He hit several pedestrians as he drove past before he came to a stop. Two men, both in their 60s, died. The injured were taken to a hospital.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted that his heart was with the people of Amqui. He thanked the rescue workers. Quebec Premier François Legault wrote on Twitter: “What happened in Amqui is shocking. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.” In early February, a man intentionally steered a bus into a kindergarten near the city of Montreal, killing two children. Six other children were injured. The 51-year-old driver was arrested.
