The hens in North Rhine-Westphalia laid around 1.41 billion eggs last year. The number was 0.9 percent higher than in the previous year, as the state statistics office announced on Wednesday.
With 1.01 billion eggs, just over 70 percent came from barn systems. 8.7 percent of the eggs were laid in cages and 12.4 percent in free-range systems. 7.2 percent of the products came from organic production companies. Compared to 2015, the outdoor and organic areas increased significantly. Eight years ago, the proportion of free-range eggs was 7.4 percent and organically produced 4.8 percent.
According to the information, there are 302 farms in NRW that have at least 3,000 places for hens.
