Ski star Marco Odermatt has surpassed the legendary record set by alpine icon Herrmann Maier and set a point record in the overall men’s World Cup. The Swiss won the last giant slalom in Andorra and ended the winter with a total of 2042 points.
Never before had a male ski racer had a better season. The previous record was from the 1999/2000 season – at that time the Austrian Maier collected exactly 2000 points.
For Odermatt, the season ended where it began in October: at the top of the podium. The 25-year-old celebrated 13 World Cup titles and stood on the podium 22 times. There are also two gold medals at the World Championships in France. Odermatt secured victory in the overall World Cup and the small crystal globe for the best skier of the winter in giant slalom and super-G.
Odermatt’s lead over second-placed Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen was 2.11 seconds. Austrian Marco Schwarz was third. The German parallel world champion and giant slalom specialist Alexander Schmid was injured.
