The move of national soccer player Timo Werner from RB Leipzig to Tottenham Hotspur is perfect. The 27-year-old attacker successfully passed the medical check at the English Premier League club on Tuesday and is moving to London for an initial six months. Both clubs announced this on Tuesday evening. Tottenham also secured a purchase option for Werner, which is reportedly worth 17 million euros.
Werner wants to gain match practice with Spurs and recommend himself for the home European Championships in the summer. He had lost his regular place in Leipzig, was never in the starting eleven in the Champions League and only twice in the Bundesliga.
In Tottenham coach Angelos Postecoglou’s system, Werner could initially take on the role of Heung-min Son. The former Bundesliga professional will be in action at the Asian Cup in January. Werner could make his debut for the North Londoners on Sunday, when his new club will take on Manchester United. According to Tottenham, he will wear the number 16 jersey.
Werner already played in England from 2020 to 2022 for Chelsea FC, who signed the attacker from Leipzig for 53 million euros. A year and a half ago, the Swabian returned to Saxony for 20 million euros, but since then he has not proven to be the reinforcement he had hoped for.
“Timo and we would like him to gain as much match practice as possible with a view to the European Championship in Germany next summer,” said Leipzig sports director Rouven Schröder: “He was shown the opportunity to do this at Tottenham Hotspur, so a loan makes sense for all parties .”
