The presidency of the UN Security Council rotates monthly, with the 15 member states alternating in alphabetical order. This month it is Russia’s turn, as scheduled.

Moscow had announced in the past few days that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov would chair a Security Council meeting on “effective multilateralism” in April. Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also said Lavrov would chair a debate on the Middle East on April 25.

The US has criticized Russia’s role and permanent seat on the UN Security Council. “A country that shamelessly violates the UN Charter and attacks its neighbor has no place on the UN Security Council,” said White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre recently. “Unfortunately” Russia is a permanent member of the body and there is “no practicable international legal process” to change this.

The Green foreign politician Jürgen Trittin also criticized. “The country that attacked its neighbor Ukraine more than a year ago will chair the supreme body for maintaining world peace,” he said on Saturday. “This is how the goat becomes a gardener.”

Unfortunately, there is no hope that Russia will heed the vote of 141 member states to withdraw from Ukraine, explained Trittin. “For the duration of the UN Security Council presidency, Russia will not even be willing to rest its arms.” Instead, the Russian army and mercenary groups fighting for Moscow would “continue their illegal and war criminal offensive,” added Trittin.
