A landslide caused by continuous rain trapped two residents in their family home in Rhineland-Palatinate. Because of the heavy rainfall in recent weeks, part of the slope behind the house in Kasel (Trier-Saarburg district) began to slide early on Sunday morning, the police said.

The rear outer wall was almost completely filled in with earth and mud. Firefighters had to free the two residents through a window, with one woman slightly injuring her leg.

Next to the residential building on a country road, the emergency services erected barriers made of sandbags to prevent the softened masses of earth from sliding down further. The road was closed and damaged power and gas lines had to be secured by the fire brigade. The house was initially declared uninhabitable until experts checked the statics. The resulting property damage was the police with about 150,000 euros.

As a result of heavy rain, several rocks fell on federal highway 421 in Rhineland-Palatinate on Saturday. The route was initially closed, people were not injured according to the police. There have already been several rockfalls on the stretch between Kellenbach and Königsau in the past.
