There have never been as many memberships in sports clubs in Bavaria as there were last year. The Bavarian State Sports Association (BLSV) in Munich had around 4.7 million members at the end of December. According to BLSV, that is around 170,000 more than in the previous year. During the Corona years, the number of memberships fell to 4.3 million. But even before Corona, the current level had not been reached.

Almost a quarter of memberships are made up of children who are not older than 13 years. Adolescents and young adults up to the age of 26 make up another 18 percent. According to the association, the majority of members in Bavarian sports clubs, around 60 percent, are people over 26 years old.

While the number of members has increased in recent years, the number of clubs to which they are distributed has fallen. According to the BLSV, there were almost 11,600 active sports clubs in the Free State in December last year. In 2019 there were just under 11,900.
