Icy temperatures around freezing point have led to an increasing number of ice accidents in the evening and at night. In Oderwitz, Saxony, in the Görlitz district, a 28-year-old drove his car off the road and collided with two trees. According to police, he died at the scene of the accident.

The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned in recent days of persistent slippery conditions, freezing rain and snowfall in large parts of Germany. Several centimeters of fresh snow are possible in Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia.

This was also noticeable in the situation centers of the interior ministries and the police. In Schleswig-Holstein, for example, a significant increase in icy accidents was noticed at night, a spokeswoman said. There were several car accidents related to the weather on the A1 and A7 in the north.

There were also several traffic accidents at the beginning of the night in Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and the Upper Bavarian district. However, according to the police, these usually ended lightly with no injuries and only property damage.

In the coming days, the slippery conditions are expected to remain in many areas of Germany for the time being. The DWD issued further warnings of slippery conditions and snowfall for several districts, including the Alzey-Worms district in Hesse and the Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Freiburg districts in Baden-Württemberg.
