Tennis professional Alexander Zverev followed Jan-Lennard Struff into the next round at the ATP tournament in Monte Carlo and easily reached the round of 16.
The 25-year-old Olympic champion won 6: 4, 6: 4 against the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in his adopted country. Zverev converted his first match point after 1:47 hours and was much more stable than in the three-set win in the first round over Kazakh Alexander Bublik.
Zverev: “Match at a high level”
“It was a high-level match for both of us. I’m happy to be playing at this level again. It was definitely different from yesterday,” said Zverev. The former world number two dominated the game with his serve and, despite five double faults, made fewer mistakes than he did against Bublik the day before. Even after Bautista Agut’s only break in the middle of the second set, Zverev kept his nerve, immediately took the service away from his opponent to make it 4: 3 and was able to celebrate a little later.
In the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 tournament, the world number 16 meets. on the winner of the game between Russian Daniil Medvedev and Lorenzo Sonego from Italy. He could experience the first real endurance test of this clay court season. For Zverev it is the return to this surface after his serious foot injury at the French Open last year.
Shortly before Zverev, Struff had defeated the Australian Alex de Minaur in 69 minutes with a strong performance 6: 3, 6: 2. “Sand is the better surface for me against him. I would never have thought that things would go so well,” said the 32-year-old Warsteiner on Sky. “I’m very, very happy with how much energy I put on the pitch.”
Struff is now dealing with either the Norwegian Casper Ruud, number four, or Botic van de Zandschulp from the Netherlands.
