Car buyers in Germany can now choose from 78 all-electric models. However, they are still much more expensive than comparable petrol engines, said the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) in Bergisch Gladbach on Wednesday.
“The average starting price of all 78 BEV models, weighted by new registrations, is 48,700 euros.” The average starting price for micro, small and compact cars is 32,155 euros. However, the most popular are the SUVs with a share of over 43 percent of electric registrations. They cost an average of 47,627 euros.
Head of study Stefan Bratzel sees room for improvement: “The market leader Tesla triggered a global price war that will lead to lower entry prices in the long term.”
For the year as a whole, CAM expects pure electric cars to grow by 17 percent to 550,000 new registrations in Germany. “Electromobility in Germany and China continues to develop faster than the market as a whole,” said Bratzel.
Almost 95,000 battery electric vehicles (BEV) were registered in the first quarter. Their share of the total registrations rose to a good 14 percent, while the share of plug-in hybrids (PHEV) halved to 5.6 percent after the subsidy premium expired. According to CAM, the Chinese manufacturer MG Roewe is among the top ten in Germany for the first time with 3117 electric vehicles. The market leader for e-cars is Tesla with 20,655 new registrations ahead of VW (13,443), Audi (7,637), Mercedes (7,298), Hyundai (5,394), BMW (4,334), Smart (3,380) and Fiat (3,125).
According to CAM, the average range of the 78 BEV models in the best equipment line is 342 kilometers for the micro, small and compact cars, and 553 kilometers for the upper middle class and luxury class. The curb weight is 1.5 tons for the low segments and over 2 tons for medium-sized SUVs. “Large SUVs have an unladen weight of more than 2.5 tons.”
