The discounter Lidl is trying out a new concept in its branches. As the Grocery Newspaper reports, transverse shelves have already been installed in some discount stores – a so-called cooling tunnel. The cooling shelves for sausage and cheese are placed opposite each other. “By juxtaposing the refrigerated shelves, we can significantly reduce energy consumption,” a Lidl employee from the Bad Wimpfen branch is quoted as saying.

But it’s not just energy consumption that will be reduced by the new arrangement. “The items are placed closer together. This means that the distances for customers are shorter.” Sorting the goods should also be easier and quicker.

The new concept will be introduced gradually, first “in Flörsheim in Hesse, among others, but also in Schwelm in Westphalia as well as in Bavaria and Berlin”. According to Lidl, a branch in Sindelfingen was recently renovated. According to the Grocery Newspaper, Lidl said upon request that it did not want to apply the new concept nationwide. However, they are so satisfied with the results in the test branches that other locations will also use the new concept.
