In the attack on a planned refugee accommodation in the former “Spreehotel” in Bautzen in October 2022, the authorities are now assuming a xenophobic or xenophobic background. The investigation into the suspicion of serious arson is ongoing “and will continue to be pursued with great intensity,” as the Interior Ministry’s response to a small query from the AfD in the state parliament on March 17 about the status of the investigation said. The circumstances of the crime – target of the attack, time, manner – speak for politically right-wing motivated crime. The perpetrator or perpetrators have not yet been caught, according to the Görlitz public prosecutor’s office, the procedure is “still against “unknown””.

On the morning of October 28, a fire broke out in the former “Spreehotel” after windows were smashed. In the week after that, the first refugees should move into the house. Four employees of the hotel owner who stayed in the building were not injured. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the area is now being patrolled more “to minimize the risk of further possible arson attacks”. Additional security measures have also been implemented.

The former hotel, located outside of the city on a reservoir, is provided by a private owner and operated by the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Awo). The first refugees then moved in late at the end of November 2022, as the Bautzen district office announced on request. With 191 residents, it is currently almost full – a total of 195 people can live there.

The former hotel was already accommodation for asylum seekers from 2015 to 2017. In 2016, an arson attack was carried out on the house with Molotov cocktails. However, they crashed on the footpath behind the fence they were flying over and went out. Three young men were sentenced to suspended sentences in 2019.
