The people of Schleswig-Holstein will re-elect the municipal councils and district councils in a month. On May 14, around 2.3 million citizens aged 16 and over are called upon to cast their vote. Around 13,000 mandates are to be awarded. The candidates compete in around 1,080 municipalities belonging to a district, in the 4 urban districts and in the 11 districts. In the 27 small communities with up to 70 inhabitants, no community representatives are elected. There, the municipal assembly consisting of the citizens of the place decides. There is no five percent blocking clause. EU foreigners can also vote and be elected.
In the 2018 local elections, the CDU was clearly ahead of the SPD (23.3 percent) and the Greens (16.5 percent) with 35.1 percent. Prime Minister Daniel Günther has announced the goal for the CDU of becoming by far the strongest party in the country. As in the state elections last year, the Greens want to achieve second place. The FDP got 6.7 percent in 2018 and wants to do better this time. The SSW also wants to grow. Five years ago, the party of the Danish and Frisian minorities managed only 2.3 percent.
