Whenever industrial companies invest in ecological projects, the accusation of greenwashing is raised: Is the venture really sustainable and sensible, or does it primarily serve to promote one’s own PR as a good company? “I don’t have this suspicion about the Mars Coral Reef Restoration Program in Indonesia,” says marine biologist Ines Lange from the University of Exeter. The chocolate bar and pet food multinational Mars’ project to restore coral reefs has been around for around ten years, but the company has only been reporting on it for a few years.
