After extensive renovations, the Schwerin State Museum is scheduled to reopen in the summer of 2025, two years later than originally planned. Among other things, the historic floors, ceilings and walls on the ground floor will be restored and the entrance area will be redesigned, as the Hamburg entrepreneur Alexander Otto said in Schwerin on Wednesday. The exhibition area is to be increased by 400 square meters through the redesign of depots.
In the first four years after the opening, admission to the Schwerin State Museum should be free, as Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) announced. The first two years would be financed by the Otto Foundation, the other two years by the state. Then the test is evaluated. The aim is to make access to the museum and its precious collections less accessible, said Schwesig.
Culture Minister Bettina Martin (SPD) announced a new concept for the exhibition. It will become more child- and family-friendly and also more digital, said the minister. She justified the delay in construction with the necessary replanning as a result of Schwerin’s application for the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The new stairwell planned for the outside would have jeopardized the World Heritage status, which is why it had to be rescheduled.
