Economics Minister Robert Habeck wants to expand solar energy in Germany much faster with a package of measures. After another “photovoltaic summit” with representatives of the industry in Berlin, the Green politician presented a strategy.
In concrete terms, sufficient areas should be available for open space systems and planning and approval procedures should become faster, as the ministry announced. In order to use more roofs of apartment buildings for photovoltaics, a new model for communal building supply is to be introduced. This should enable the on-site use of solar power for all parties in the house. So-called balcony PV should be easy to use, the systems can be connected quickly.
A first summit with representatives of the industry took place in March. Habeck called photovoltaics one of the cheapest energy sources of all. The extension is picking up. With the strategy, the expansion should be significantly accelerated again. All the brakes that had previously prevented a higher pace of expansion were to be released.
The German Solar Industry Association welcomed the plans. Only with comprehensive energy policy reforms and a consistent removal of investment barriers will the photovoltaic share be able to increase from the current 10 percent to 30 percent in the next ten years, with electricity consumption increasing sharply at the same time. The association’s general manager, Carsten Körnig, said: “We need light speed everywhere.”
