A double-decker boat capsized in India – at least 22 people died in the accident. Seven children were among the dead, the government of the affected state of Kerala said on Monday, according to local television station NDTV. The investigation into the cause of the accident on Sunday evening was still ongoing, the police said.
The boat was overcrowded and most were not wearing life jackets, the Indian Express reported, citing survivors. Many people in India cannot swim. It was said that the boat owner was being investigated. The rescue work continued.
Local authorities announced compensation of one million rupees (about 11,000 euros) each for the families of the victims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences to the relatives.
