In the opinion of a majority of Germans, the television broadcasters should not pay higher amounts to the world association FIFA in poker for the TV rights at the women’s soccer World Cup next summer.
This is the result of a representative survey by the opinion research institute Civey on behalf of the news portal “web.de”. 69 percent of the participants answered the corresponding question with “no” or “rather no”. Only a minority of 15 percent spoke in favor of it. 16 percent were undecided.
Most recently, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock pushed for a rights agreement for the tournament from July 20th to August 20th in Australia and New Zealand and also made ARD and ZDF responsible. “One is FIFA, to which we can urgently appeal, the other is the public broadcaster,” said the Greens politician.
“ZDF offers are based on the market price”
ARD sports coordinator Axel Balkausky had meanwhile spoken of a “market-oriented offer” to FIFA, and the second had also emphasized in a press release: “ZDF’s offers for the acquisition of sports rights are based, among other things, on the market price for the respective sports right. The market value may deviate significantly from the price expectations of rights marketers.”
Almost ten weeks before the start of the World Cup, it is still unclear who will broadcast the tournament on German television. In view of the stalled negotiations, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had warned that the games could not be shown on TV in Germany either.
