The basketball players of FC Bayern Munich have hired successful coach Pablo Laso as their new coach.

As the cup winner announced, the internationally renowned coach and long-time maker of Real Madrid will succeed Andrea Trinchieri. The 55-year-old has signed a contract until the summer of 2025.

“Pablo is one, if not the most successful coach in European club competitions in the last decade,” said managing director Marko Pesic at the presentation of the Spanish coach. With him you want to “not only prepare for the next season, but also lay a foundation for the coming years.”

Eleven years at Real

Laso coached Real Madrid very successfully between 2011 and 2022 and led the team to six championships and two Euroleague titles, among other things. “It’s a great honor and I’m happy to be in Munich. I want to thank this big club for thinking of me writing Bayern’s next chapter in the Euroleague and BBL,” said Laso. “It’s a big step for me to go to another country.”

Laso’s former club reported a heart attack to the basketball coach a year ago. A lot has been said about his health, Laso said. “I feel good.” When it came to restructuring the squad, those responsible held back. “We’ll talk about that from today,” said sporting director Daniele Baiesi.

unsatisfactory season

Despite the cup victory, the Munich team can look back on an overall unsatisfactory season. In the championship they failed in the semi-finals, in the Euroleague they clearly missed the hoped-for entry into the playoffs, in which they want to be a constant participant. After a high-value sponsorship deal with BMW, FC Bayern is hoping for a further boost from future games in the new SAP Garden. From the 2024/25 season, an as yet unspecified number of games is to be played there.
