Trees that fell after days of rain have killed at least two people in Chile. In addition, there are six missing people as a result of flooding, the Interior Ministry of the South American country said. Around 8,000 people were cut off from the outside world and more than 750 houses were badly damaged. Several rivers in the center of the country burst their banks and evacuations were ordered in some areas. The government declared 5 of Chile’s 16 regions disaster areas – including those around the capital Santiago.
In some areas, more rain has fallen in the past few days than it has in 30 years, said President Gabriel Boric in a speech after visiting an emergency shelter in the municipality of Coltauco. With regard to climate change, he emphasized: “We will experience more and more adverse events from which we also have to learn.”
