A young German woman died in an avalanche accident in the Tyrolean mountains. Her two companions survived uninjured, as the APA news agency announced on Sunday, citing the police in the western Austrian state. According to the police, the accident occurred on Saturday morning when the 28-year-old tourist wanted to ski down the 2,820-meter-high Gaiskogel in the Stubai Alps with her partner and his friend on freeride skis and a splitboard.
While preparing for the descent, the young woman lost a ski, which – although equipped with stoppers – only got stuck in the snow after around 200 meters. According to the police, her partner went down to the ski, but was hit by an avalanche on the way back and was dragged around 20 to 30 meters. The 26-year-old rolled over several times but was uninjured.
His partner was buried in a second avalanche. The mountain rescue team dug her out, but all attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful. The 32-year-old friend was not hit by the avalanche. The two men were brought to safety by emergency medical helicopter and handed over to mountain rescue.
