It’s not easy with the name Beckenbauer in the football business. Anyone who bears the surname of the “Kaiser” Franz Beckenbauer is following in big footsteps. Luca Beckenbauer, grandson of the German soccer legend, was willing to do so. But nothing will come of his targeted professional career.

After all, the 22-year-old recently played in the regional league for Greuther Fürth’s second team and for Wacker Burghausen, made a total of 48 appearances in the league and dreamed of making the leap to the professional division. But the central defender with the famous name can probably tick off this future perspective. A long-Covid illness put a spoke in his wheel.

After a corona infection in November 2022, Beckenbauer could not get back on his feet. He has not played a competitive game since then. The long-term consequences are immense, he told the Munich newspaper “tz”: “Nine months later, I can only do a little sport. It would take a long time to get back to my old level. That’s why I want to reorient myself early on.”

In his case, reorientation means: away from competitive sports. Instead, he wants to concentrate on his real estate management studies. Beckenbauer only wants to play football “for fun”, he told “tz”. He has joined the district league club MTV Munich and now wants to play with friends and his brother at the weekend.

Luca Beckenbauer’s father Stephan was also a professional footballer. In the 1992/93 season he played twelve Bundesliga games for 1. FC Saarbrücken. After his career, he coached youth teams at FC Bayern. Stephan Beckenbauer died of a brain tumor in 2015.
