Would USMNT star Gio Reyna receive a medal if Borussia Dortmund beat Real Madrid in Champions League final?
On Saturday, June 1, Borussia Dortmund will face Real Madrid in the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium in London. The question on everyone’s mind is whether USMNT star Gio Reyna would receive a winners medal if Borussia Dortmund emerges victorious. Before going on loan to Nottingham Forest, Reyna made two appearances during the Champions League group stage for Borussia Dortmund totaling 20 minutes. According to UEFA, the winning team is presented with 40 gold medals and the runners-up receive 40 silver medals. There are no restrictions on who receives these medals, but no additional medals can be produced.
Historically, any player who makes an appearance in the final receives a medal, pointing to Reyna potentially getting one. If Reyna does receive a medal, he would join his United States men’s national teammate Christian Pulisic as the only Americans to have won the Champions League in recent years. Jovan Kirovski, also with Dortmund, became the first American to win it during the 1996-97 season, although he did not play in the final.
Reyna’s potential medal would add to his season highlights, which include helping Nottingham Forest avoid relegation. Currently on loan, he is expected to return to Dortmund during the summer to determine his future. Stay tuned for the Champions League final on June 1 to see if Reyna will be adding a winners medal to his collection.
