The shared taxi service Moia transported around 2.9 million passengers in Hamburg last year. Moia has officially been part of local public transport since the beginning of 2023. This enabled the business area to be expanded into the districts of Wilhelmsburg, Lurup/Osdorf, Billstedt/Billbrook and Rahlstedt. Around 445,000 people used the service to travel to or from these parts of the city last year, the company announced on Tuesday.
In addition, since it was first approved as part of Hamburg’s local transport in January 2023, 15 wheelchair-accessible vehicles have been part of the fleet. Wheelchair users used the barrier-free service for 31,000 journeys last year. At the same time, severely disabled people and their companions with the appropriate token were able to use MOIA for more than 240,000 trips free of charge. “The numbers show the need and relevance of our offering,” said Moia CEO Sascha Meyer.
In 2022, 1.4 million people used the electric minibuses, as the Senate announced in November in response to a small question from left-wing MP David Stoop.
The VW subsidiary was launched four years ago on April 15, 2019 in Hamburg. According to Moia, it is currently testing autonomous ridepooling in a pilot project in Hamburg. The aim is to “develop an autonomous, internationally scalable ridepooling system and put it on the roads in Hamburg after 2025”. According to Moia, ridepooling combines several requests from passengers who want to go in a similar direction.
