A major fire broke out on Monday in a new, not yet opened water park in Gothenburg, Sweden. A spokesman for the Liseberg amusement park, to which the fun pool belongs, confirmed this to the TT news agency. Accordingly, the entire building is on fire. According to police, several people were injured on site. They were therefore able to seek medical treatment themselves.
The cause of fire was unclear for the moment. According to the theme park management, the fire broke out in the outdoor area of the new Oceana Waterworld attraction and quickly engulfed the entire building. The water park is part of an expansion that was scheduled to open this year.
Footage from Swedish television station SVT showed dark, dense smoke spreading over the city. The head of operations asked residents in the area to stay in their houses, close doors and windows and turn off ventilation. According to the police, the buildings in the immediate vicinity of the water park, including a hotel, were evacuated.
According to the Gothenburg amusement park, there were no guests in the water park when the fire broke out. The “Oceana” water park was scheduled to open in the summer. It is to become part of Liseberg, the largest theme park in Scandinavia.
