For SC Freiburg there is a quick reunion with West Ham United in the round of 16 of the Europa League. This was the result of the European Football Union UEFA draw on Friday in Nyon. Accordingly, the Baden team will meet the English Premier League club on March 7th and 14th. The Bundesliga team competes at home first.
Freiburg and West Ham had already faced each other in the group phase. The SC lost both preliminary round games against the 2023 Conference League winner and finished second in Group A. In the playoffs, the Breisgauer team won spectacularly against RC Lens from France on Thursday. After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, they were already 0-2 behind in the second leg and won 3-2 after extra time.
“Somehow it’s stupid that you can play against your group opponents again in the round of 16,” said Freiburg captain Christian Günter, who missed the preliminary round with an injury. “We can go there with a broad heart. It’s not out of the question that we’ll advance and then face another opponent.”
The Europa League final will take place in Dublin on May 22nd.
