The Gerhart Hauptmann Theater in Görlitz is looking for a successor to its previous general music director Ewa Strusinska. She is leaving the house at the end of this season. The house announced that it will be decided in mid-May who will lead the New Lausitz Philharmonic in the future.
According to director Daniel Morgenroth, 4 women and 70 men applied for the position. The five most promising candidates will now each conduct a performance of Richard Wagner’s opera “The Flying Dutchman”, the production premieres this Saturday in Görlitz. In recent weeks, some of the candidates have already presented themselves for the position by conducting a classical concert.
Ewa Strusinska took over the management of the New Lausitz Philharmonic in 2018. A search committee was formed to select her successor. In addition to the artistic director, the committee includes ensemble members as well as representatives of the opera choir and the orchestra. The decision is due to be made on May 13th.
