The strike by the German Locomotive Drivers’ Union (GDL) also started in North Rhine-Westphalia on Thursday morning – with consequences for millions of travelers. The train stations remained largely empty.
The strike is nationwide, but the emergency timetable is running as planned, said a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn in Düsseldorf. “Unfortunately, we’ve already had a bit of practice. So I think most commuters have adjusted. It’s going as planned.” This applies to private providers, but also to the train itself, which still runs on some routes. “We think this will continue throughout the day.”
The strike is scheduled to last until Friday at 1 p.m., but according to the railway, the entire Friday will still be affected by the effects of the strike. Trains from smaller railway companies such as Nationalexpress, Eurobahn or RheinRuhrBahn will not be on strike.
