It is a shocking sight: a stroller lies on the road of a large Berlin street, a police officer kneels next to it. There are two wrecked cars a little ways away. A 41-year-old was seriously injured in a serious traffic accident in Berlin-Mitte on Saturday near Potsdamer Platz and then died in hospital. A spokeswoman for the Berlin police told the German Press Agency.
Her four-year-old child, who was also seriously injured, underwent emergency surgery on Saturday afternoon. The woman’s partner and sister were taken to hospital with shock. All four were in Berlin as tourists.
The accident site was secured with red and white tape long after the accident. According to the police, the otherwise busy Leipziger Straße was temporarily completely closed in both directions. Buses were also not allowed to pass.
Many questions remain unanswered
According to the police, the course of the accident is still unclear. The investigation into this is ongoing. According to initial findings, the woman and the child in a stroller were hit by a car on Leipziger Strasse in a construction area near a shopping center.
The 83-year-old driver was also taken to the hospital, but was released after outpatient treatment and a blood sample, according to the police spokeswoman. The Berlin fire department said he was also seriously injured.
According to the fire department, rescue workers tried to revive the mother and child at the scene of the accident. They were then further resuscitated on the way to the hospital.
Another vehicle involved in the accident
Following the accident, another car crashed into a vehicle. According to the fire department, the driver of the car also suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital.
A number of other accident witnesses and first responders, some of whom were in shock, had to be looked after by the emergency services, including an emergency chaplain. According to its own information, the fire department had a total of 48 personnel on duty.
Meanwhile, police forces examined the scene of the accident. How both parts of the accident are connected is still unclear, said the police spokeswoman. From the investigators’ point of view, it was one accident, not two accidents.
