For the Democrats, the outcome of the primaries was almost certain from the start. Biden had no serious competitors from his own ranks.
Among the opposition Republicans, ex-President Donald Trump is also likely to achieve the necessary number of delegate votes on Tuesday. In addition to Georgia and Mississippi, the west coast state of Washington also held its primaries on Wednesday, as did Hawaii for the Republicans.
Trump needs a total of 1,215 delegate votes. The right-wing populist has effectively been confirmed as the Republican presidential candidate since his last intra-party rival Nikki Haley dropped out after the super election day “Super Tuesday” last week.
The presidential candidates of the two major US parties will be formally chosen at party conferences in the summer after the nationwide primaries, which run until June. The Republican convention takes place in July in Milwaukee and the Democratic convention in August in Chicago. The presidential election will then take place on November 5th.
