Dutch professional footballer Quincy Promes, who was convicted of cocaine smuggling and was arrested in Dubai allegedly for a separate offense, is to be extradited to his home country. As several Dutch media reported on Wednesday evening, the Netherlands will request the extradition of the 32-year-old Spartak Moscow attacker. The Amsterdam public prosecutor’s office confirmed this.

The 50-time national player was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison by a court in Amsterdam in mid-February. The court found it proven that he was involved in smuggling around 1,350 kilograms of cocaine through the port of Antwerp in January 2020. A second defendant, a cousin of Promes, was also sentenced to six years in prison.

Promes, who was in Dubai for a training camp with his club, is said to have been involved in a traffic accident there a few weeks ago and then fled the scene of the accident. When he planned to leave the country with his teammates, he was arrested at the airport.
