The figures from the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) were really surprising. Germany saved more than ten percent of C02 and other greenhouse gases in 2023 compared to the previous year. Emissions fell above average, particularly in the energy sector. The UBA writes that the expansion of renewable energies in particular contributed to this. More than half of the electricity last year came from renewable sources such as sun and wind. In addition, German citizens saved on heating energy due to the mild winter (and probably also because of the high gas and oil prices).
