If you only have a small amount of space in your home, it is all the more important that you make the best possible use of your limited space. Especially the heart of the apartment or house, the living room, should be furnished in such a way that it is comfortable, inviting and not too crowded. Our tips can help you set up your small living room sensibly.
Logical: If the room is small, the furniture should be too, so as not to take up too much of the available space. Of course, functional furniture that can be enlarged for the right occasion is particularly practical: a sofa bed that can be folded out when you have visitors; or a dining table that can easily be extended when friends or family come over for dinner, for example. A table that converts into a shelf is also a particularly space-saving solution if you want to set up a small living room and have a place to eat.
Even if a gallery wall is an attractive decorative element, it takes up space in a small room for elements that you could put on the wall instead and that are both visually and functionally convincing. Wall shelves that can accommodate both pictures and other things are just one example. Floor shelves that use the space up to the top are also useful. But plants hanging from the ceiling can also be a good idea to keep the floor from being too crowded and to add vibrancy.
A well-known trick to make a room appear larger is to add a mirror. It should be large enough to achieve this effect. If you like it unusual, you can choose an asymmetrical model. A rectangular model brings a little more calm into the room. Models without a frame look even fresher and less stocky for a small room.
Dark colors, especially on the floor and walls, can be overwhelming and make a room look smaller. It is better to use them sparingly: a single painted wall or a dark, small carpet are sufficient as accents if you want to set up your small living room and ensure comfort and homeliness. By the way: horizontal stripes make a small room appear even wider and can be a good idea – both on the wall and on the carpet or cushion. Otherwise, light colors are a better choice. A bright carpet, for example, brings freshness into the room and opens it up. Tip: It is practical if the light-colored carpet is washable. If such a carpet variant is not comfortable enough for you, you can compensate with cozy accents such as (artificial) lambskin or plush cushions.
Speaking of cosiness: the right lighting provides precisely this effect – which is indirect at best. Because direct light often doesn’t look very homely. It is better to use several indirect light sources when you are currently furnishing your small living room. Because several light sources, for example on the wall in the form of a wall lamp or a chain of lights, open up the room, create an inviting, harmonious atmosphere and are not as bulky as a large, individual ceiling lamp that would attract selective attention.
