The remains of a German mountaineer who had been missing since 1986 were found on an Alpine glacier in Switzerland. On July 12, mountaineers discovered bones, a shoe and equipment on the Theodul glacier near Zermatt, as the police of the canton of Valais announced on Thursday. A DNA comparison showed that it was the “climber who disappeared in September 1986,” the police said. The man had been traveling near Zermatt and had not returned from a tour, the police reported. He has been missing ever since.

The 38-year-old at the time of his disappearance had not returned from a climbing trip. A search for German was unsuccessful at the time. Climate change is accelerating the melting of glaciers. Bodies of climbers who have been missing for decades are being found more and more frequently.
