Bundesliga club Werder Bremen failed to win either of the two games against French first division club RC Straßburg in a double test on Saturday. In the first duel in Strasbourg, Werder couldn’t get past a 3-3 (2-3) lead after goals from Oliver Burke (27th minute), Nick Woltemade (35th) and Justin Njinmah (70th). “We should have defended better at the beginning and completed one or the other attack better,” Werder quoted his coach Ole Werner as saying. The second game was lost 2-1 (1-0) late despite Jens Stage’s opening goal (34′).

Werder will play the first competitive game of the season next Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky) in the first round of the DFB Cup at Viktoria Köln. The following week, the Hanseatic League open the new Bundesliga season against FC Bayern Munich.
