Shortly after Potsdamer Platz there is no stopping him. Bass pounding, asses shaking, drag queens kissing, hundreds of thousands on the streets – Berlin is celebrating Christopher Street Day and a bit of itself too: weird, shrill, anarchic.

Selfies, shaking hands and: “I’m glad you’re here.” Wegner, 50, now casually dressed in jeans and white sneakers, dances to the techno rhythms pounding out of the speakers, and he hands out dozens of rainbow-colored paper fans to the revelers. He seems very happy now.
