Even a day and a half after the serious crash in Cologne-Deutz, the accident continues to make headlines. Because the police suspect that the cause of the accident could have been an illegal car race.

A total of 14 people were injured in the Rhine metropolis on Friday evening, some of them seriously. A 28-year-old at the wheel of a rented Audi Q3 crashed into stopping vehicles at a red traffic light, the police said on Saturday. The person who caused the accident, who was not responsive after the crash, was arrested.

According to police information, witnesses said the Audi driver ran several red lights before the crash, which damaged a total of ten vehicles. On the street not far from the Cologne-Deutz train station, there was a picture of devastation, pieces of debris were scattered in a wide area.

The public prosecutor’s office and the police then announced on Saturday evening that an arrest warrant had been issued against the driver of the Audi sports car “due to the strong suspicion of a prohibited motor vehicle race”.

The emergency services were presented with a picture of the devastation when they arrived at the scene of the accident: the cars were “pushed into each other, sometimes stacked on top of each other,” as a police spokesman for the AFP news agency reported. The Audi had lifted off and remained on the roof of a small car, the police later specified.

A total of 14 people were reportedly injured and required hospital treatment. The driver of the Audi and the 30-year-old driver of a small car remained in hospital. The police confiscated the Audi and three mobile phones and had a blood sample taken from the man at the hospital.
