The state government of Saxony-Anhalt wants to maintain the reduced sales tax for food in restaurants. At the end of the year, the reduced sales tax of currently seven percent will expire, according to a proposal from the government factions in the Magdeburg state parliament. The reduction in the tax rate has led to significant relief for companies over the past two years.
“Our restaurateurs still have to cope with the consequences of the pandemic, energy crisis and inflation,” said the economic policy spokesman for the ruling CDU in the state parliament, Ulrich Thomas, on Friday. Permanent relief is urgently needed. The Left and AfD also spoke out in their own motions in favor of maintaining the reduced tax rate.
The state government should join an initiative by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the Federal Council to push for a continued reduced tax rate at the federal level.
