During the summer holidays in Bavaria, traffic on the motorways was backed up for a total of almost 20,000 kilometers. This is a slight decrease compared to the previous year, the ADAC automobile club announced in Munich on Wednesday. In 2022, traffic jams during the six-week holiday totaled more than 21,000 kilometers.
Drivers had to be most patient on the first holiday weekend at the end of July – namely 53,500 minutes over a length of 2,359 kilometers, as the ADAC calculated. According to traffic experts, traffic jams decreased in the middle holiday weeks. More holidaymakers than in 2022 had therefore decided to travel by plane. In addition, commuters would probably have used the train more with the Deutschlandticket.
In the past, Saturday was the day when everyone left or returned. This has changed according to the ADAC’s observation. The traffic jams were also spread over the weekdays. “The appeals for anti-cyclical driving seem to be bearing fruit,” said Jürgen Hildebrandt, head of the traffic, technology and environment department at ADAC Nordbayern.
The most congested motorways in Bavaria were the A3 and the A8, with 4,700 and 4,800 kilometers respectively. The ADAC recorded the longest single traffic jam on Saturday, July 29th on the A8: between Rohrdorf and Bad Reichenhall, progress was slow over a length of 39 kilometers.
