Hold Perpetrators in Pupil Punishment Case Accountable
PETALING JAYA: A group of child rights activists are demanding accountability for the teacher, headmaster, and any other authority involved in the case of an 11-year-old pupil who was forced to stand under the sun for nearly three hours on April 30. This reckless act resulted in the child suffering heatstroke and being diagnosed with a nerve condition, making him a person with a disability.
The activists, including prominent figures such as Datuk Dr Amar-Singh H.S.S. and Sharmila Sekaran, emphasized that such actions must not go unpunished and should be considered as child abuse. Despite the police’s involvement, there has been no significant response from the Education Ministry, Welfare Department, or Health Ministry since the incident took place.
In light of the extreme heat wave, the group highlighted the importance of monitoring activities that may expose schoolchildren to hot weather conditions and ensuring their well-being. They called for regular audits, mandatory reporting of incidents, and swift disciplinary action against those who fail to comply.
The need for well-trained and resourced teachers, as well as clear policies on acceptable child correction, was also emphasized by the group. The incident has sparked a debate on corporal punishment in schools, with activists arguing that alternative disciplinary methods, such as positive reinforcement, are more effective in promoting positive behavior and creating a supportive learning environment.
The case papers have been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor’s office for further action, highlighting the seriousness of the situation and the importance of holding those responsible accountable. It is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of all children in educational settings to prevent such incidents from happening again.
