Massive 8-Alarm Building Fire Prompts Evacuations in Redwood City
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – A massive 8-alarm building fire in Redwood City has prompted evacuations for nearby residents, schools, and a hospital on Monday afternoon, June 3, 2024. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office issued evacuation orders as fire crews work to contain the blaze at a six-story building under construction along the 2700 block of Middlefield Rd.
The fire, which started around 10:15 a.m. on the 5th floor of the building, has led to residents living along Pacific Ave., Calvin Ave., and Dumbarton Ave. being asked to leave the area. Strong winds gusting at 30 mph are complicating firefighting efforts, and the fire is also impacting commuters with delays reported on Caltrain services.
The building that caught fire was intended to be a 179-unit affordable housing project called Middlefield Junction in North Fair Oaks, featuring new apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms, a child care center, and community open space. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries at this time.
Evacuations have also been ordered for students at Garfield School, who were dismissed early on Monday. School officials have assured parents that all children are safe and supervised at the school until they can be picked up.
