Fresh Start Produce Recalls Cucumbers Due to Salmonella Contamination
Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. of Delray, Florida, has issued a recall for whole cucumbers that were shipped to certain states between May 17th and May 21st, 2024, due to potential contamination with Salmonella. This bacterium can lead to serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, a product sample tested positive for Salmonella, prompting the recall. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently conducting whole genome sequencing to determine if this sample is linked to an ongoing Salmonella outbreak investigation.
The recalled cucumbers, which were shipped in bulk cartons, were distributed to retail centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors in several states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Consumers are advised to check with their retailers to see if the affected cucumbers were sold at their location.
Individuals who have purchased the recalled cucumbers are urged not to consume them and either dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
