Volkswagen is bringing its own car rental business, the subsidiary Euromobil, into Europcar. The car rental company, which also belongs to the group and which VW took over in 2022 together with a consortium of bidders, is joining Euromobil with 51 percent, VW and Europcar announced. The aim is to combine the business of both companies.
Until now, Euromobil was a 100 percent VW subsidiary. It offers rental and workshop replacement cars through the group’s car dealerships. Nothing should change in this direction. Euromobil will continue to operate independently of the Europcar business in the future. The new ownership structure has no impact on the employees. The company employs around 400 people across Germany.
Europcar is intended to become a mobility platform
“The merger with Euromobil is of strategic importance in Germany and offers great potential for expanding the business area,” said Europcar boss Alain Favey. Christian Dahlheim, head of Volkswagen Financial Services, said: “We are pooling the Volkswagen Group’s car rental business to create synergies.”
Euromobil was founded more than 30 years ago as a dealer-owned car rental company and was taken over by VW in 2012. Six years earlier, the group separated from its subsidiary Europcar. After the buyback in 2022, the Wolfsburg-based company is now bringing both subsidiaries together under one roof. The group had announced that it would expand Europcar into a mobility platform that, in addition to classic car rental, would also cover offers such as car sharing and shuttle services.
